Understanding the Difference Between Medicare and Medicaid

Understanding government-run programs can be complex, and understanding health insurance coverage can be tricky. When you tie the two together, it can be positively confusing. However, it doesn’t have to be. In this post, we’ll explain the differences between Medicare and Medicaid so you can determine which government-run health insurance program is best for you.

What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program that provides coverage for individuals aged 65 and older or individuals under age 65 who have a disability. Anyone who fits these age and ability parameters is eligible to receive Medicare, regardless of income level.

You are also eligible for Medicare if you have another form of health insurance. In this case, Medicare will cover some benefits, and your other insurance will cover others. To learn more about what Medicare will and will not cover, call 1-800-MEDICARE.

What Is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a state and federal health insurance program that provides coverage for low-income individuals. This can include adults, children, elderly adults, and people with disabilities. For this reason, there may be some individuals who are eligible to receive both Medicare and Medicaid.  In California, Medicaid is called Medi-Cal.

How Do You Choose?

In order to ensure that you sign up for the federal program(s) that best suit you, make sure you qualify. Here’s what you need in order to receive benefits from Medicare and Medicaid.
